Scientific interest and research outputs by the renal and cardiology communities regarding cross talk between the heart and kidney -- the so-called “cardiorenal syndrome" -- has increased dramatically. The International Congress on this topic during the 2010 Scientific Sessions seeks to address the essential elements of our understanding of how the heart and kidney interact with each other in both health and disease.

The term “cardiorenal syndrome” will be discussed and carefully dissected into its component parts with the focus being on pathophysiology, diagnostic biomarkers and key signaling pathways as well as non-pharmacological and pharmacological therapies. A particular interest is in diseases that are known to be important co-morbid contributors to the vicious cycle that is the “cardiorenal syndrome.”

While the latest in basic and clinical research will be presented, the focus will be on the clinical relevance of the syndrome to the healthcare provider and their patient. These sessions will be of interest to both researchers in the field and clinicians involved in prophylaxis against, or management of, the cardiorenal syndrome in every day practice.

Topics of this year's Congress include:

  • Defining Cardiorenal Syndrome
  • Diagnosis of Cardiorenal Syndrome
  • Chronic Kidney Disease and Cardiovascular Disease: Is there Something Special about Risk, Reversibility, and Impact on Outcomes?
  • Regulation of Sympathetic Activity and Heart Failure
  • Renal Function During Acute Cardiovascular Events: Scope of the Problem, Reversibility, and Impact on Outcomes
  • Renal Artery Stenting is Superior to Medical Therapy in the Management of Renal Artery Stenosis
  • Biomarkers of Cardiorenal Syndrome
  • Renal Function in Cardiovascular Disease
  • Common Signaling Pathways in the Heart and Kidney
  • Diuretic Resistance in Cardiovascular Disease: Prevalence, Mechanisms, and Therapy Options
  • Heart-Kidney Interactions in Acute Kidney Injury
  • Heart-Kidney Interactions in Diabetes and Obesity
  • Pharmacologic Therapy for Cardiorenal Syndrome
  • Non-pharmacologic Therapy for Cardiorenal Syndrome
  • Cardiorenal Safety
  • Lowering Blood Pressure for Cardiovascular and Renal Risk Reduction

"The American Heart Association's International Congress on CardioRenal Cross Talk and Syndromes is a unique opportunity for both scientists and physicians throughout the world to present and discuss the latest advances and controversies surrounding what we commonly refer to as the cardiorenal syndrome."
